There are specific boxes that are made to carry the weight of a fan. It is not just a plain old electrical box which are not legal for supporting ceiling fans. Home Depot and Lowe's carry these in the electrical section that has the fans.

When it is attached you will need to bring power to it and either use a wall switch or a radio remote control for on/off.

For a ceiling fan.... the box needs to be supported across the ceiling joists. It should securely fasten to the joist on either side of it, or to a brace that is fastened to both.

You can find a box that is mounted on an adjustable bracket... the whole thing will fit thru the standard hole found for most ceiling fixtures, and you do not have to 'tear up' the ceiling. It is sold at most building supply, and hardware stores. Once it is in the cavity, you can adjust the brackets, so that they spread apart to grip the joists on either side.

Obviously, you should turn the electric off to the circuit before removing the original light fixture (if there is one), or before connecting the new wiring to the fan. The fan, (and light kit, if you bought a fan with one) will contain the wiring diagram in its mounting instructions.

Install the box in the ceiling. Install a switch in the wall. Install the new electrical circuit. Hang the fan and connect everything. Nothing to it.

When you buy the materials you need, pick up a fire extinguisher also. And make sure your homeowners and contents insurance is high enough to cover any loss.

you have to bring power to the point where you want the fan (from a receptacle will work). Buy the proper box to hold the fan. Run a switch wire if one is desired.
