It seems that the red light has a delay now and that's kind of annoying to me.

Greed
The area where the goal judges used to sit was prime seating. Not to mention that because the goal judge was as high as they were, sometimes they were in the way of the fans seated behind them.

LITY hit the primary answer. I have heard stories about those seats having a face value of $1500+ or being put up for auction.

IMO, the other reason is that they just aren't needed any longer. The technology is in place to review everything back in Toronto and replay is far more reliable than the human eye. If they are going to move goal judges as far above the ice as thy have, I would just as soon drop them entirely and have the officials blow the whistle when they signal goals. They have really become nothing more than a signal for the arena to trigger the fireworks and sound effects. I cannot recall the last time I saw an on-ice official communicate with a goal judge now that they deal with the replay officials.

There are goal judges still, just not where they used to be to free up expensive seating so the owners can make more money.

Personally, I was about to say technology and the obvious when the mesh flutters.
