sex objects?

Question

why is it men think they can abuse women for sex objects? do they not realise women have a personality, brains and feelings.

this question may sound cliched but i'm after honest opinions (esp from men) and personal accounts

Unfortunately, SOME men actually do see women as sex objects, and I've been shocked by how common it is -- but SOME men find it just as disturbing as you do.

I think it has to do with what some social scientists call being "homosocial" (socializing only or primarily with your own sex). Traditionally, most boys were expected to play primarily with other boys. I think that those who have not typically had close, female friends find and only came to interact with girls for sexual reasons tend to see women more as sex objects. Also, some "macho" all-male cliches demand objectification to prove how "straight" you are.

Those who've had close female friends or were close to their sisters are use to seeing women as people and know how to understand them -- we do not see women as sex objects, but think of sex as two equal partners mutually pleasing each other. We are also more likely to want to be close to our partner and have a complete relationship, to have platonic female friends besides our girlfriend, and to be offended by those who do treat women as sex objects.

I never thought of women in this way -- I'm not into casual sex, and even if I was I'd want a partner not an object. I didn't even know about this way of looking at women until a few years ago. At that point I was working in a fairly low-class job, and found several of my coworkers thought in this way. I found it disgusting, since I wanted a relationship with a person!

I don't understand it either. I wish men wouldn't masturbate either. Men are driven by nature if you will with the desire to impregnate women. So when they feel aroused, like a foot fetish for example, they see only the woman's feet and want to masturbate against them. They barely see the woman but are only thinking about their primitive need. Men need to be less selfish and think about women's feelings. They should masturbate at home rather than use a woman as a masturbation machine.

Its not a choice for men, it is a large part of our conscious presence of body and therefore mind. I've always wondered if Women have a lower sexual baseline then men and this sort of question does seem to indicate perhaps the female perspective considers that men are not as sexual as we really fundementally are, most of the time we are awake!

Julie, what type of sexist question is this? You have made a gross generalisation that does not apply to all men. These types of questions are examples of "man-bashing" and only serve to perpetuate the view that men are aggressive perpetrators of sexual abuse.

The majority of men that I know are very respectful of women.
