I need to develop a fake program I could implement in a school for my ed. research class that can help lower the achievement gap between these two races. How could I do this without singling out one particular group? Could I pick a class...give a test...see the difference btwn the two...give the test again after implementing my program...and then compare the scores to see if the gap has shifted?

I don't know about that, but I bet most of them would know the difference between 'do' and 'due'.

Standardized tests call for comprehension and comprehension requires reading skills. Unless your fake program is reading friendly, the AA's will still have problems with the test.

Maybe a test using ebonics and testing two groups, would the caucasians do as bad as the AA's on the standardized test. At least your results would highlight comprehension differences between the two groups in your desire to demonstrate achievement gap on standardized tests.

Its just an idea and good luck!

Sounds like you have a good start! When writing the test, ask questions that are understandable and relevant to people of all races and backgrounds. The problem with standardized testing has been a tendency to ask questions that white people have an easier time understanding and thus causing them to score higher. You could ask some african american students for their input on your questions, too. That might be helpful.

That sounds like a good option. If you have to make up the test yourself try to remember to make the test so it is not so structured to the caucasian life style. Make it equal among both races and even it out on all social levels. Don't just ask questions that mostly whites could relate to. That always hurts other races and cultures. Good luck.
