another female student by way of friendly affection? I hope this wasn't motivated by any religious fundamentalism that thinks that all touching is obscene.

I didnt see that but I usually hug my friends as I am greeting or leaving. Who knows if that is the last time you will ever see them?

I'm a special ed teacher, and we are not allowed to hug kids. If they run up to us and tackle us around the knees, we are directed to turn slightly so if hugging is necessary, it is side by side.

As an aside, I found this interesting.

So where are we supposed to get our daily hugs? Some litigious person should sue the PC people for depriving us of things necessary for health. The above and what follows is from the Hugs For Health Foundation:

Proper Hug Etiquette
also known as the
Rules to Safe Hugging

Always respect another's space.

Ask permission before hugging.

A hug is a compassionate gesture,
hug accordingly.

A hug is a gentle embrace,
not the Heimlich Maneuver.

Be "in" the hug, don't simply
go through the motion.

Happy Hugging!

It's just the latest example of idiocy in the world of public education. Let me share a few others. My eldest son was enrolling as a sophomore at his new high school. He wanted to take a class in computer science. The school said he had to be at least a junior. Meantime, his old teacher from his freshman year had made contact with a colleague in our new place of residence. So, that colleague asked my son if he could come to the school district headquarters after school and help them with a software problem. My eldest daughter was given a suspension because she would not accept her history teacher telling the class that Japan attacked the United States before Hitler invaded Poland.
The incident in Mascoutah wasn't a byproduct of fundamentalist religious belief. It's the crowd which equates touching with pedophilia and other forms of sexual assault.

I go to Mascoutah Middle, and I agree with the school, but not to the extent of an afterschool detention. I have a friend who was caught cussing and only got a noon. Does the school really think that a hug is worse than cussing? If so, Mr.Stone needs to get his priorities straight.I know Megan, and she is not as sweet and innocent as the news shows. She hugged someone, was warned, and DID IT AGAIN. I think that the afterschools were more because of defiance of the rules than hugging.

I read this on yahoo and my mouth just dropped.. I couldnt believe what i was reading to be honest.. I mean come on its just a hug, If i were her parents i would be sueing that school because what is so wrong with a hug.. And they specified that it was just a friendly hug to a friend..
This world is getting crazy and the schools are passing way to many laws of their own that shouldnt be in my own oppinion..

Stranger still, I've not heard much more about the children who were having intercourse in a classroom full of students, and the teacher was present as well.

This happened or at least was reported to have happened twice, different kids, different schools.

I answered this question earlier.... there is something wrong with teaching children that it is a punishable offense to give someone a hug... why can't these people come up with something constructive and positive to do with their time... I just don't get it... everyone needs a hug for Christ sake!

no i haven't, but who knows, maybe hugging will lead to friendships or something nice, and who would want THAT. Oh, perish the thought. What could this world be coming to with actions like that. Good thing it is being nipped in the bud.tsk tsk such goins on.

Several years ago I read where a school in the New Eng. area suspended a little boy for pointing his finger and going pow! He was a first grader and out at recess, excessive agression. Pretty scarey.

I thought it was stupid too..then after I thought about it...there are some people you don't want to hug you. There might be some pervert who would do that for bad reasons. Maybe they had some incidences like that to happen at that school and they're trying to avoid it from happening again. I don't know what their reasoning is...but surely they have a reason for the rule.
