It's how I refer to cell culture. When I say my research involves 'cell work' it means that I am testing out my hypothesis in a cell model.

For example, one of my projects as a grad student was studying a protein called 'villin' and it involved cell work. I genetically altered cells to express more or less villin, then I observed them under a microscope to look for changes in the shape and migration of the cells.

On the other hand, there were people in the lab who were looking at villin without cells. They looked at the chemical proerties of the protein, the structure, sequence and so on. Even this involved growing cells (if you're going to study a protein, you need to get it from somewhere), but the focus of their research wasn't the cells themselves.
