Lidge has a great upside. At 30, he's still pretty young and he's a bona fide closer. This year was better for him than last year (3.36 ERA, .219 BAA and 19 saves), despite the Astros poor finish. He'll probably do pretty well in Philadelphia.

Bourn is the real plum for the Astros. Hunter Pence is pretty good at the place for them in centerfield, but he's probably a better fit in right field, which is where the Astros want to move him. Bourn could be a star in the making -- it's a risk trading a good closer for an unproven centerfielder, but Bourn's probably worth it.

The others in the trade -- Bruntlett, Geary; and Costanzo -- are pretty much throw-ins. I've never been a big fan of Geary -- he generally is a 4+ ERA, 1.4+ WHIP and .280 BA type of set-up man. He might have a great game, but he also might break your heart.

Bruntlett is a journeyman -- he's stayed with the Astros since 2003, but I'd expect him to leave the Phils within 3-4 years (at most).

Costanzo might actually be a bigger prize than most people figure. He's listed as the "minor leaguer" without a name in a lot of reports, but he hit 27 home runs for Reading last year. He was a good college player at Coastal Carolina (45 HRs in three seasons), but he has consistently improved as he's advanced through the minor league ranks. The Astros could use some third base help, so you might see Costanzo moving up to help there in the near future.

Overall, I think the Phils benefit on the front end. But this trade could really help the Astros a ton in two or three years.

I hadnt heard this deal until now.I wonder who the 3 minor leaguers are.I live in Reading,Pa which is the home of the Phillies AA team. There was some talented players there last year.Unfortunately for Astros fans you probably got screwed because Ed Wade is a loser.

Well I see the deal and can say looks like Wade pulled one over on his old team.Bourn will be a great leadoff man and will lead the league in steals,Geary will give solid innings out of the bullpen and Mike Costanzo may end up being the starting 3rd baseman and hit 20-25 HRs.Thanks Wade, you are still screwing the Phils.

Well I've found a link to this deal.

The Phillies gave up Michael Bourn (OF), Geoff Geary (P), Mike Costanzo (3B). I think this is good for the Astros. Brad Lidge was working on a comeback, but after that home run he gave up to Albert Pujols in the NLCS of 2005, he just hasn't been the same. This other guy, Eric Bruntlett won't ever be anything big (.250 avg in 320 games). Michael Bourn, and I quote from the column above "...Bourn, a 25-year-old rookie, hit .277 with one home run, six RBI and 18 stolen bases for the Phillies in 2007." seems like a guy who might be able to become a pretty good player in his career. Geoff Geary probably not, but hey they got a pitcher in return. The other guy's (Mike Costanzo) info reads as, "...Costanzo, 24, hit .270 with 27 home runs and 86 RBI for double-A Reading, finishing second in the Eastern League in home runs. A 2002 graduate of Archbishop Carroll High School in Radnor, Pa., he was a second-round selection by the Phillies in the 2005 draft out of Coastal Carolina University.". I'm saying this is a good deal for the Astros in the long run.

Time will tell if it's a good deal or not. If Lidge gets back to his old form, this trade is a steal for the Phillies. Bourn is fast but can't hit much, a 4th outfielder at best. Geary has been largely inconsistent and nobody is really sorry to see him go. Costanzo is the only one that may turn out to bite them, especially since they have nobody to play 3B now or in the future. I think right now you'd have to call it even as far as who got the better of the deal. Geary & Bourn can play at the MLB level but they aren't impact guys. If Lidge just needed a change of scenery and can be the lights out closer he was a few years ago - the Phillies will clearly have gotten the better of the deal.

If you could tell us who the three minor leaguers are, we could give you an opinion. Lidge is a very good player and Bruntlett is a 5th infielder type guy. So who did the Phillies supposedly give up for them?

Getting anything of value for Lidge is a win for the Astros at this point.
