Watch children.....look at what makes them laugh and what makes them sad...these are triggers....write about them. it is actually all about being observant and watching what gets them motivated!

Make it unique and definitely have a great illustrator. That can make or break the book. And a lot of kids books that are popular right now are just kind of quirky and funny.

either take on a "lesson" that hasn't been addressed yet...something more real and modern....or create a new type of creature or animal. maybe a line of books filled with creatures that are combinations of a bunch of different animals

make it a little longer i love to read to my son before he goes to bed but some of the stories are so short and make it funny now days some of them are so sad, like mrs katz and grandpas soup they made me cry!!!! lol but i loved jane and the tooth fairy and all of the aurther books

Children have WILD imaginations..so something weird, but interesting, funny, and intriguing..that would be ideal.

whatever you do, don't put a boy wizard, a boy wizard with shaggy black hair and green eyes, or a boy with latent magic abilities who somehow gets to a magical world via secret passage in a train station... once is enough, and there's enough ripoffs these days
