Alot of people have touched on good things here as to why the French Revolution wasn't sucessful violence being the key. But the true reason the French Revolution in comparison to the American Revolution was unsuccessful was becasue its actions and leaders were unable to provide stablity to the populace of France.

In the period of 1789-1815 France goes through numerous Constitiutions and governmental systems (summarily)

an absolute monarch (Louis XVI 1789-1792)

to a constitutional monarch (Louis XVI with the National Asembly 1793 king and royal family is executed)

to a Repulic ruled by the Council of Public Saftey with Robsepierre and the Terror till 1796

to the Directory (a kind of republican representative governmt 1797-1799)

only to be overthrown by Napoleon who becomes first a consul (similar in function to those in the Roman Empire) to an Emperor in 1803 finally to a military Dictator until his defeat and excile in 1815

During all this time almost continually France is at war for close to 20 years. The goal of a Revolution is to overthrow an existing government, and set up a stong lasting Constitution, and an efficent governmental system.

The American Revolution does this with contained violence and little internal strife the French Revolution does not. Though the effects of the French Revolution were felt even in the new young America where many Americans thought they should help their former French allies

The French Revolution also destroyed itself. Those who started it by getting rid of the monarch were later killed themselves. They couldn't get the people totally behind it. The only way out of the mess was for a strong leader to come in and take over. There wasn't a group of people wanting the same things. Enter Napoleon.

That first person was half right. the French Revolution was successful, in its own way. However, you might not think so because of all the blood that was shed in order to end it. i think that's the answer. i'm not sure. we're so close to studying that part in European History.
