Well, the eagle won out over the turkey so it was a deliberate choice of percieved ferocity, freedom, and nobility (unsubstantiated by the birds themselves) over abundance and prosperity. The forefathers had their reasons I'm sure but the better question is why the bird is carrying around arrows in all our currency.

The ability of our leadership to ignore well thought out and pointed arguments in favor of a solution that simply looks better, and the ability of those that came up with those level-headed arguments to hold the country together despite its leadership, long enough for the wrong animal to become a 200 year old tradition.

So, perseverance in the face of incompetence; thanks to a handful of turkeys, we can continue to be a nation of eagles. That's what it means to me, anyway.

They look really nice. But they are actually mainly scavengers and very combative. Yep, just like the gov't.
