I just thought about something that has chewed at my memory for half a decade. I played Super Mario on Nintendo 64 a few years ago and never figured out how to open the outside cannon with the grid on it, you know? I may have opened it... I don't think so. Even if, I never figured out how to shoot onto the roof to retrieve my 99 lives. Anyone know how I should have done it? It doesn't matter now, but I just was curious.

Ah, the good ole days. Yes, Super Mario 64 was a very awesome game.
The only way to open the cannon you are talking about was to get all the stars in the game (120 stars in all). Once you beat the game, the cannon grid will be open. Drop into it and launch yourself onto the roof of Princess Peach's Castle. Once you are up there, you will see Yoshi, your noble steed from Super Mario World. He'll give you a message from the programmers and supply you with 100 lives!!! Yay... I guess.
By the way, the cake is a lie...

I think you had to get all the stars. That was a fun game ! I want to play again! Ok I'm going to go dig it up. But yeah I think ytou have to get all the stars. I know I opened it some how.
Yeah and Yoshi is on the top of the castle. It would have been cool if you could ride him like in Super Mario World for SNES. It would also been great if they would have included Luigi and made it 2 player. Thats the only thing that bothered me about that game.

Oh my gosh it's been so long since I played. Is that the part that you have to break through all the overhead bricks and then drop down into an opening and break just the right one??

i think that when you "beat" the game, when you get all 120 stars or w/e the little bomb omb dude comes out and opens it, but durring the game its just for decoration or something to make you sidetracked

you have to get all the stars then you can use the cannon.
