Hiya John

There have been great guitarists from Muddy Waters in the late 40s thru to the present day.
But ....... if you look at flair, inovation, technique, power and charisma it's got to be Jimi Hendrix head and shoulders above the rest.
I've interviewed loads of guitarists over the last 20 odd years and virtually all of them cited Hendrix as "The Man"

Cheers Mike

There really is supposed to be only one answer here, and I don't think that's really answerable. I think Jimi Hendrix is the most acclaimed (and thus considered the best), but I'm not completely sure. For all I know, a classical guitarist may be the one.

Santana
Robert Johnson
Jimi Hendrix
Jimmy Paige
Eric Clapton
David Gilmore
Slash
George Harrison
Joe Perry

Personal vote goes to either Hendrix or Gilmore. Hendrix for the wah wah peddle, and gilmore for sheer genius.
Best of the best that is due major credit is Robert Johnson though, he shaped music more than just about anyone and never made $ from it, well maybe enough $ to buy a pint of moonshine, but thats not the kind of money I am referring to, PURE talent ingrained.

That's a matter of opinion. History never declared the "best" guitarist.

Even the folks at Rolling Stone relied heavily on Things That Don't Matter, like public opinion. Probably the best guitarists ever haven't been heard all that much. And you haven't even specified a genre for a direction, other than the title of this section. Ain't gonna happen. Oh, you'll get answers, but who's going to offer the definitive one?

Why ask, really? There's no real answer, and more people are liable to cite a Rolling Stone magazine list than make an objective case for a guitarist.

I would say Hendrix. Not saying by a fact- but by an opinion. "Voodoo Child" gives me chills. No guitarist has done that to me before.
