This is the best piece of advice you can have when picking a dress. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT listen to ANYONE on a dress color unless they know your skin tone and eye color. Snowy blue might be in for the season but it could look like absolute crap on you (I'm not saying it does; just an example).
Here's my advice. PIck whether your skin is warm or cool. If it is more yellowy or bronze/golden and you look best in gold jewelery and have warm brown eyes, you're probably warm toned. I'd guess you would look LOVELY in a gold dress (beautiful for winter!)
If your skin tone is cool, and you look good in silver jewelery or have paler blue eyes and look good in pastels, try these colors. A soft red, purple, turquoise or aqua.
Even better, silver would be great.
Trust me on this one. You will really stand out at a winter formal in a dress of silvery (or gray) or gold (even a warm bronze will do). Few people wear these colors despite the fact that it looks AMAZING. Metallic colors are wonderful!
