I have an image and I wanting to give it the appearance as if a "beam of light" (or anything ghostly looking) has flown by.....

Check out this tutorial site. The 5th tutorial on this page titled "Light From Behind a Door" might give you some pointers on the lighting effect you're looking for....Good luck.
