2 Problems, please help!

1) Saratogo and New York are 180 miles apart. A truck traveled from new york toward saratogaat a rate of 65mph.Another truck traveled for saragota to new york at the rate of 55mph. How many miles did each travel before they met?

2) Two planes started at the same time from the same airport and flew in opposite drections. One flew 60 mph faster than the other. In 5 hours, they were 5,300miles apart. Find the rate of each plane.

1. did both trucks leave their stations at the same time? not given, so they may not have met each other. Anyway, assuming they did, then:

time = distance / rate
time = 180 / (65 + 55)
time - 180 / 120
time = 1.5 hours

therefore, truck from new york travelled 65mph X 1.5 hrs = 97.5 miles; and the truck from saratoga travelled 55mph X 1.5 hrs = 82.5 miles. (97.5 + 82.5 = 180)

2. rate = distance / time

R1 = rate of Plane1
R2 = R1 + 60 = rate of Plane2

R1 + R1 + 60 = 5300 / 5
2(R1) + 60 = 1060
2(R1) = 1060 - 60
2(R1) = 1000
R1 = 1000 / 2

Therefore, rate of plane1 = 500 and rate of plane2 = 560.

1) Let t be the time taken

65t + 55t = 180
t = 1.5

so distance travel = 65 x 1.5 = 97.5 and 55 x 1.5 = 82.5


Let x be the speed of the slow plane

5x + 5(x+60) = 5300
10x + 300 = 5300
10x = 5000
x = 500
the speed is 500mph and 560 mph
