I think it'd be ok, as long as one pattern is much more subtle than the other. You can wear 2 patterns, it's just that both of them can't be bold. Then it would clash. If you can, try going for a more subtle plaid, like, for example if the shorts are grey, then the pattern on them should be subtle, like just a few shades lighter or darker than the rest of the shorts. Then the shirt can be big bold stripes. But if it's different colours and bold prints and the like, then it definitely would clash. Hope I helped!
