I have chickens. laying hens will produce eggs without the help of a rooster. It's just like a human. The female produces eggs, regardless if she is having sex or not. The eggs you buy in the store are not fertilized. They are fed a special mixture of food to make them better producers. Hens lay there eggs rectally. That's where both the rooster and the hens sex organs are. Just try not to think about the next time your eating eggs.

haha funny, actually, i just heard a joke about this... this girl randomly said today while we were working on a drawing "Eggs are chicken periods!" And it's true. The way chicken eggs work is this: Female chickens, known as hens, produce eggs naturally. However, for the egg to become fertile, a male chicken, the rooster, must come into contact with it. The eggs that we eat are unfertilized, and thus are not actually baby chickens.

Of the first half dozen answers only one is correct and that seems to be because none of the other answerers have ever seen a hen and probably never took a sex education course.

Yes those chickens are females because only females lay eggs. Yes all birds have a cloaca, that multipurpose opening that EVERYTHING comes out of. Yes there are several ways things get into their cloaca but only one exit there.

No the roosters only purpose is to fertilize eggs and almost all eggs you will ever see are not fertile.

yes you need a rooster. usually the farmers keep bunch of chickens and one rooster. the roosters fight and they are not very useful, so they keep small amounts of roosters. the rooster goes after the chickens and then chicken sit on the nest and pop eggs. i think a chicken only lays one egg a time.
