Bacteria are tiny, single-celled organisms. They are prokaryotes: they have no nucleus and no organelles with membranes.

Bacteria is a prokaryote. It is a microbes which is larger than a virus and smaller than a fungi. It can be parasitic or saprotrophic. Bacteria have a cell wall of murein and they don't have an organised nucleus and they don't have any membrane bound organelles. Bacteria have a cell membrane and a cytoplasm. The correct question is "what ARE bacteria?" because one on its own is called a bacterium.

Bacteria are tiny, single-celled organisms. They may be pathogenic (disease-causing) like "streptococcus" that causes strep throat, or symbiotic like "lactobacillus", the friendly bacteria you find in natural yoghurt. There are lots of different species of bacteria. Some are rod-shaped, some are round, and some are comma-shaped. They are categorized according to the proteins in their cell walls, depending on whether they stain with a particular dye called "gram stain".

Hope that helps!
