example: say I own www.yahoo.com and I have it pointed to one ip address. then I made a subdomain like mail.yahoo.com, can I point it to a different ip address? even if its just one address higher or lower? If so, do you do this in the dns server? or what?

You will have to do this with an A record entry in the DNS for the subdomain name. It is just another DNS entry but will need a separate A record. That record goes in the SAME file as does the main domain name you do not create a new zone just a new record. If that subdomain is also your MAIL server you need to add the MX records as well!

You also have to be sure that the server software also knows where that domain is located. If it is a separate server and not just a separate IP then the server will handle it but if it is on the same box just a second IP then Apache or IIS or whatever http software you are running will have to be told what directory that subdomain is located.

you have to change your advance DNS record. if you not sure then don't do that. you have to modify your A record and you have to point it on new ip.
