First off, I'm guessing that either your battery had died or you had the battery disconnected which trips the radio to go to code mode. Check your owners manual for the radio manual. There should be a sticker in there with the code on it. If you have lost or bought the car without this manual, you will have to take it to a BMW dealer and they will be able to retrieve the code by the serial number on the radio unit. They shouldn't charge you much for this. WIthout the code there is no way to reset it or anyway to get around it. It's an anti-theft measure.

If you're talking about the E36 318ti, you could get the code from the dealer, but you'd be much better off with an aftermarket radio since it uses a standard DIN sized head unit. Also try looking in your owners manual folder... there's usually a slip of "radio certificate" paper in there.
Any headunit pushing 30w per channel or more would sound much better than the stock BMW unit that came with the car.
www.crutchfield.com will have some nice ones. They will also mate it with the correct BMW plug for you so it literally becomes plug-and-play. Choose from simple CD units all the way to LCD units!

If you do not go to the dealer, you need to remove the radio, there should be 2 small covers on the sides covering 2 small allen bolts. Loosen those and the radio pulls out. Then you need to note the type of radio, Alpine, Blaupunkt, etc and the serial number. You will then need to contact a dealer service department and give them this info and see if they will access your radio code. If you get the code and are in the wait or lock screen in the radio from entering 3 wrong codes in a row, you will need to leave the vehicle with the key on and engine off for 1hour before you will be allowed to reenter a new code. Hope that helps, wish it was easier than that but its not.
