1. To format a drive: go into the BIOS (when computer starts up look to press a particular function key), then go to the drive options selection...where you can partion hard drives...at this point make the partitions you want and delete the partitions you want.
2. When you format it...it is erased. (technically it just erases some "data pointers"....and so technically it can be recovered (by a specialized data recovery place that you would have to pay a lot of money for....for their expertise)
3. stuff deleted = yes
4. Before you format the drive: make backups of any data you want to keep....ie: pictures, text files, music, etc...
ALSO if you are going to reinstall the operating system...make sure you have the drivers for all your hardware...esp. your network card! because if you can't get on the internet...you can't download drivers for anything else!
And ESPECIALLY make sure you have your Operating System disk! AND the activation code!

Yes, when you format a drive everything on that drive will be deleted. You will need to backup anything that you wan to keep on another type of media. Formatting a drive cleans off the drive and creates brand new sectors to record information.

2. You will lose EVERYTHING in that drive.

4. Back up all you stuffs. Make sure u have all the drivers for ur hardware. ex. driver for video card, driver for sound card...etc. Also if u try to install another window, XP to Vista or Vista to XP, u must have hardware drivers for that OS.

formating a drive removes EVERYTHING. when you format a drive, you make the drive blank. before u format, i suggest u back up ur data. the way i do it is to upload the important stuff to a email account. like yahoo, Google, msn, excite.
