I have a Compaq Presario V2000 that originally had 256 mb...yesterday I bought 512 mb memory and added it in the empty slot...when I checked the RAM under "my computer" properties it only shows 384 mb...however the processor speed on there somehow doubled from 780 smthing to 1.58 ghz...Then I used this one site "www.crucial.com" and it scanned my computer and said I have a total of 512 mb installed...256 in each slot...so I'm not sure what exactly is going on...I thought if I installed 512 then my RAM would increase by that amount...any help/explanation/suggetions?!!

PS....the memory is DDR SODIMM PC2700

you have a built in video card. the video card is "sharing" memory with your computer. basically, your video card took some memory to use for itself. if you want, take the memory back and get a 1gig stick.

The new memory may not match the existing card. Or your motherboard only allows 256M per slot.

to install ram you must, MUST, turn off the computer the whole way, then you must unplug the power cable and then insert the ram where it goes, then wait 10 sec.

After that is all done, true it on, and see if it is installed on the computer.

your memory has to exactly match, nothing different.
