for a public assistance-type business, such as a homeless shelter or At-Risk Children's program. I would also consider a position as a grant-writer or fund raiser for a non-profit organization. Would I pursue a Psychology or a Humanities Degree? Or something else?

For case manager, most people get a masters degree in social work, although there are other ways to do it. You can also get a bachelors in social work at some universities and start a bit lower at an organization. For an MSW, a psych undergraduate degree would be OK.

For grants-writing and fundraising there is no particular program, although a non-profit concentration in business would probably be good. You just have to break into the field (usually writing parts of grants and doing the grunt work) and then move up.

i agree with the first poster...you would need to get a degree either in sociology or psychology. some schools also offer BSW's (bachelors of social work) then you can also go on to pursue your master of social work if you want. alot of places will accept bachelor's level graduates because many non profits and grant-based agencies cannot afford to pay master's level social workers. however more and more places are requiring their Case Managers to have MSW's as part of the requirement for getting a grant. i got my msw because it defnitiely opened up alot more doors into the social service field, which it sounds like you want to work in anyway. my undergrad major was sociology but alot of other students had bachelor's in psych/sociology/social work. good luck!

Usually Social Work, but a BA only lets you be a case worker in most instances.

You might be able to mange things at a smaller private place.

Generally in the public sector its an MSW plus experience to be a manager.
