The * does not mean multiply. The substance is called a hydrate and the * means that for every one MgSO4 in the solid there are also seven water molecules. These H2O molecules are not chemically joined to the MgSO4, but rather are trapped (in various ways) inside the crystal matrix.

The above answer about heating is entirely correct.
