Depends on which definition of "classical writer" you want to use. One common definition includes the writers, style, and subject matter of the great Romans up to about 400 AD

Thus Quintus Smyrnaeus is a classical writer (Posthomericam c. 380 AD), but Augustine (397 AD) is not. His style and subject matter are just too different.
