are really just attempts to have irresponsible casual sex without having to deal with the consequences?

If you don't want to be a father, YOU are responsible for preventing pregnancy. If you took no precautions during sex, you have no right to cry about the consequences later.

You would never even THINK of whining about losing at the poker table, yet casual sex is the same sort of gambling - except there is a potential innocent child in the sex game.
Why do you jump into bed with less thought than you give to whether or not to fold when the bet is $2500?

Yes, the same responsibility falls on women. DUH! You guys are evading the question. Please try again.

Geoff: Take her wager back by choosing abortion? Abortion carries its own set of consequences - and from what I understand, they are mostly negative. So either way she loses her wager... just in a different currency.

Lister: You have touched on an important point - TOO MANY people, both men and women, want to have sex without consequences.
Not everyone, but way too many.

Mr. Shark, you do realize that the "cash payments" are spent on necessities for the child's continued existence. But it's really NOT about the money, is it?

2007-11-07 14:00:55 · update #4

Yes, Troll Shark, custody decisions are f-ed up. I guess my point is making responsible reproductive decisions so that the courts never have to get involved in the first place.
And for the record, I view divorce cases in a completely different light than custody cases in which the couple was never married.

A lot of very good answers above. Some are very blunt and to the point, some are a bit vague, but they all have a certain amount of truth and honesty to them.
It is up both genders to 'sort their act out' about contraception if they're going to have sex.
Consequences of what happens after sex are known by both genders and as far as I can see both genders agreed to this sex act and both should face the consequences weather it be together as a couple or as a casual relationship gone wrong.

All in all, its pretty simple really, if you ain't ready to face the consequences, both genders should keep their pants on.

Its no use 'male bashing' from the letters editor, sure heaps of us males make stupid mistakes, but so do heaps of females too. Please don't put all males in the same basket as you have with your gambler friend above!

"Why can't men admit that their "choice for men" reproductive solutions are really just attempts to have irresponsible casual sex without having to deal with the consequences"?

This is the fallacy of loaded question. Where did this come from? This could also be begging the question or straw man fallacy. Your argument is incomplete. I see no premises from which you drew your conclusion. That might be why you have people here who appear to be "evading the question". Again where did this question come from?

"You would never even THINK of whining about losing at the poker table, yet casual sex is the same sort of gambling - except there is a potential innocent child in the sex game.

This is fallacy of weak analogy. You don't walk home with a kid after gambling like you do after pregnancy as you pointed out (that's a major flaw in the analogy). Nor do you have to pay your gambling debts for the next 18 years if you lose one game. Nor does everyone seek gambling out as a source of pleasure. You don't seek intimacy with a deck of cards. You do seek it with another human being. I'm sure there are other problems with this analogy.

Because when it comes to pregnancy, women are able to make a choice that men cannot - the choice between terminating a pregnancy, or receiving cash payments for the next 21 years.

That ability to choose is a luxury that men are quite envious of.

Can't you at least see the basis of resentment?

Maybe, tell that to my former sister-in-law, who receives $1800 each month to support ONE CHILD, while my brother has to live in a sh!thole to make ends meet.

I'm not against child support, but there are such flaws in the process of determining the amount of support, with absolutely zero accountability of how said funds are spent, that it amounts to little more than a lottery payout for women.

But I'm sure you really know that.

The same can be said about the women. She could use birth control or abstain or demand the male uses birth control.

The difference is with the laws today the woman gets to take her bet back if she doesn't like the results of her wager (abortion) where the man has no say in it.

Same innocent child why dont you hold the woman responsible too?

Yes give me thumbs down for stating the truth.

ADDITION: Yes abortion does scar some, but there are many women who have more than one abortion, so it doesnt affect all of them that way. My point is once the mistake is made the man has no say in the matter where the woman does.

The man has to pay support for the next 18 years evne if he didnt want a child, where the woman who made the same mistake has options. Have the child, Have an abortion or even give the child up for adoption.

The man will also have to go to court to prove the woman is an unfit mother to gain custody of the child if he wants to raise the child where as the woman just has to show up. Face it it is not fair the way they handle child custody and the whole process that begins with a woman getting pregnant in a situation like this.

NOTE: I am in no way saying a man should not pay support for a child they father, I am just pointing out it is not fair. Just think if the guy wants to keep the baby in oneo f these cases but the woman wants to abort he has no say.

You are right they are not whinning about that but you do hear them whine about being a "single mom" I hear it all of the time. Guess what thats is a gamble you take when you have casual unprotected sex too.

It comes down to the fact that everyone gripes about their lot in life when it isnt ideal for them.

PRICILLA: Of course they are not whinning about abandoning a living child the ones who dont want to raise the child have the option of aborting the child prior to it coming into the world so it is not something they are stuck with. They have the choice the man doesnt my point exactly. What if the man had the choice for abortion I am sure many would take it (i wouldnt but many would) and there would be even numbers on the complaining then

All I can say is that if a man got pregnant, how may would opt for abortion? And those men who chose to carry to term...how many more kids would you have? Nil...Sorry to all those men who would make excellent child bearers..didn't mean to catergorize you all!

YES! This exactly the point I make all the time.

They say "Why are WE responsible? Women don't take any responsibility."

Other than that being a completely fallacious argument, it's also hypocritical. They condemn women for "not being responsible" while arguing they should not have to take any responsibility for their own negligent behavior.

Same can be said about women, they couldn't get pregnant with sperm only. Or are you implying that women can do nothing for avoid "irresponsible casual sex"?

Geoff: The women are either having an abortion, putting the child up for adoption, or rearing it themselves. They're not screaming for the "right" to abandon a living child and allow it to grow up in poverty with the other parent.

Exactly. I'm as pro-choice as anyone else, but women shouldn't use abortion as birth control. If they don't want to get pregnant, they must pull out all the stops to keep their wombs vacant. Also, men must do what they can to help them keep their wombs vacant.

I agree with Geoff when he wrote: "The man will...have to go to court to prove the woman is an unfit mother to gain custody of the child if he wants to raise the child where as the woman just has to show up. Face it it is not fair the way they handle child custody...".

I think every man has the RIGHT to breastfeed his own baby if he CHOOSES to do so - he has the right JUST as much as the mother - and it's simply NOT FAIR that the mother gets to do it EACH AND EVERY TIME.

SOMETHING'S GOTTA CHANGE AROUND HERE - THIS IS A TERRIBLE VIOLATION OF MEN'S RIGHTS!
