This is a plant with round, variegated leaves. The plant is about 6"-8" tall, and has a long spike of tiny bunched pink flowers arching over the top. I saw this plant in a Brooklyn garden last week and it seemed to be very happy in shade. What could this be?

Hey again. It's not a Hosta, nor a Begonia, nor is it an orchid though I can see from my description why one might think that. The leaves are white and green in a crazy patchwork kinda way. Thanks for the Park Seed link - I'm going to keep on searching.

According to this site:

what I'm looking for is not only Japanese, it's also Mexican. No wonder I've had such a hard time finding it!

Could be a variegated polygonum. I have this plant in my garden. Also known as smartweed.

Begonia? Best guess, since they often have small pink flowers as well as red and white. Leaves are usually glossy and rounded, but some variegated varieties exist. Look up begonia and check pics. They love sun or shade, nearly a perfect plant. Would really need to see a pic to ID.

You might also look up some seed catalogs online, like Park Seed co, and check out shade plants for the pics.

It sounds like a Hosta. They can have both plain green and also varigated leaves, their leaves are large and most of them have a flower spike with either white or pink flowers attached to it.
They are certainly shade loving plants but are a realy treat for slugs and snails which seem to make a bee-line for them.

Maybe it is Lungwort, but someone probably has a better match for the long spike - Lungwort spikes are small and include both pink and blue flowers - beautiful and shade-happy.

I am thinking either Heuchera, or Tierallia. In the Heuchera family, I think it is a cross breed.
But that is what first comes to my mind.
