I have been having this hissing sound in my steering when it's cold. Could not check the PS myself as is below engine. I went foran oil change today and had them check it, he said the PS fluid was low and mucky and I needed to have it flushed. So I did. $89.00. Was this flush needed?

Again, I can't get to the PS from the hood of the car. And the noise is still there. He said it should go away, I will be able to tell better in the morning though.

The Brightside:Did it stop making the noise? If it stopped, no rip off here.

The Darkside:Why ask when you already got ripped off?$89.00 just for a stupid flush?

Power steering noise is caused by several things
1) Air in system
2) Low on fluid
3) Bad pump
4) Loose belt, just a few things but,
If he flushed the PS then he should have bled the air off, another way to bleed the air is turn your steering wheel full left then right two times , turn off the engine Waite 2 minuets then restart it if the noise is there do it again and if its there go back to who charged you all that money and tell them you want your money back, they likely did not flush it and you have what you started with, I hope not but its possible. Good Luck and God Bless

I've had some cars that were over 100,000 miles and never flushed my Power Steering. If it was low fluid, my opinion is it probably just needed to be topped off.

The only thing that would make it mucky is either air or water. Either way it was a good idea to drain out the old fluid and put in new.

A flush will replace the fluid, a flush will not fix any problems, it can prevent them but not fix them. IF the fluid was dirty and you needed the flush $89 is a fair price.

I believe your power steering pump was low on fluid and just needed to be topped off. I think you got ripped. Sorry

Yes he ripped you off.It is hard to say if you needed the flush. The flush is a 15 minute job. What does he charge $300.00 dollars an hour?
