I try to sew one patchwork quilt every year for someone in my family for Christmas. It is something that I can make in 1 months time, between work and housework etc. I like doing patchwork because there are so many different prints and colors to choose from so i can pick 5-8 different colors and patterns to choose from. I love picking and choosing from all the different ones. If you don't have the time to do a quilt, make pillows. Same concept only less time consuming and you can make a matched pair.

I fix old sewing machines for a hobby. I Need something to sew to test them. I make potholders from the legs from denim blue jeans. I fill them with a couple of layers of an old bath towel. Everyone keeps asking me to make them some.

My friend sewed quilted style place mats one year for us. Another year, she sewed matching pot holders. Then, another year, she made a quilted style skirt for our tree. All items were made using material with Christmas themes -- trees, angels caroling figures, Santa, Rudolf, etc. We loved them. We treasure the tree skirt the most. I know she worked so hard on it and we use that skirt under every tree.

So many great ideas! I was thinking more along the lines of nice decorative pillows, terry cloth shower gloves, table runners,
fabric photo frames, those dolls that hold plastic grocery bags (the have a slot in the skirt to put them in), sachets for closets or drawers--that sort of thing.
Hope this helps

How about Christmas stockings that you can fill with treats? If you personalize them, this project would allow you to do all the fun embroidery stitches that some machines now have, and they could become heirlooms used year after year.
