As Disco died in the 80's, Rock dieing in the 90's, is rap dieing in the 00's? As a rap lover, To me I believe it is slowly dieing. "Rappers" such as Soulja Boy, Huey, Hurricane Chris, and other people have ruined it for us hiphop lovers. Also Lil wayne, Birdman, Rick Ross, and other popular artist have been seriously slacking due to the same "Money, Get Money" subjects. The only rappers keeping the talent in the game is Kanye, Lupe, Talib, Nas are the only "real" guys left in the game. To me, I lost interest in rap after Crank dat, and Duffelbag. I believe this rap-era is over, along with other people.

I agree that 'rap' isn't the new 'pop' anymore.
Commercially, most music comes and goes in circles. It starts off with a select few song/albums/performers, before being adopted by the mainstream and, as a result of the desire for 'quick money', severely drops in quality and originality. This was especially the case with rap, when record labels found a formula i.e. Gangster Rap in the form of 50 Cent (which I despise), that would guarantee chart success.
Here in Australia, that 'cycle' has now been adopted by 'scenester', indie groups (which I'm also a fan of, despite that abundance of rubbish that seems to be coming out a'la rap). Artists such as New Young Pony Club, Fiest and so forth, are becoming, ever so slowly, more popular.
Having said that, no, the rap era is not over, nor will it ever be. Despite being a quiet year for the genre, those 'good' artists mentioned still exist (for the most part), and will continue to release music. If anything, there runs the slight possibility of it being made better, if only due to the lesser pressure, and influence, forced by labels.

I don't think it is over, yet. There are just other genres coming up, which makes rap less popular. I think there are people giving a bad name to rap, and a lot of parents are not letting the next generation listen to it because of all the so called "violence" that exist in rap. Personally I believe that without the next generation listening to rap, it will slowly die out.
PS. I don't think Kanye has real talent, I personally think he is full of himself, and one of the ones that give rap a bad name.

I hope so.
Yesterday, call me a racist, I don't care, I saw a young black male in a car, totally pimped out. Rather than having rap blasting out of his speakers, he had real R&B coming out. I mean legitimate singers who can really sing. I was very surprised, and pleased. I hope that rap is going away and more great R&B comes along to takes its place. I miss the great R&B of the 80s and 90s that got really shuffled aside as rap grew in the late 90s through now.
While whites are a large part of rap's audience, I think many MORE people would rather have great R&B than rap any day of the week. I don't live in the hood, I don't want to live in the hood, but good R&B can touch many more people than hardcore rap can any day of the week.

I never had much love for rap. Why can't more people listen to rock? And don't rag on Soulja Boy!
