It was the first time a monarch had been executed for treason. It also shocked a lot of people because no one expected parliament to behead a king. Although he was displeased by the people, most Englishmen did not want to see him beheaded. It also marked that kings were not longer invincible and their divine right to rule was question.

Charles was not the first monarch to executed. There were many before him, going back to the sixth century. He was, however, the first reigning monarch of of the post Norman conquest to be put to death while still on the throne.
