To use substitution, I'm going to rewrite the first equation as
y = 2 - 1/2 x, and substitute for y in the second equation:

x + 2(2-1/2 x) = 4

x + 4 - x = 4

0 = 0

You have an identity here, which means the two equations represent the same line and the solutions are infinite.

1/2x+y=2
x+2y=4

x=4-2y
1/2(4-2y)=2
2-y=2
y=0

x+2(0)=4
if y=0 then x=4
