I would add to the first posters answer (which was excellent) that keeping those large armies stationed on their borders created political instability because the generals became something like a foreign power themselves and they periodically (actually quite often) turned and attacked Rome itself and declared themselves Emperor.

As Tacitus learned in 69 AD, "a secret of empire was disclosed, that an emperor could be made elsewhere than in Rome."

So the vast territory and lack of communications meant that inevitably high ranking politicians would be given command of dangerous and powerful armies with little capability for supervision and discipline.

One hypothesis for the collapse of the Western Empire is that the constant civil wars developing between the generals drained troops from the borders leaving them defenseless in front of the barbarians invading from almost every direction. Attracted to Rome by its wealth and now lack of defense. But surely that could only be one of many factors.

There must have been many. They had to rule this vast area without the benefit of all the communication devices we have today. There was no telephone, telegraph, television, radio, computer, etc. The communication revolution was many centuries in the future. The ultimate means of travel was the horse. There were no cars, trains, planes, etc. The transportation revolution was many centuries in the future. There were no steam or diesel powered boats. There was only sail and oars. Distances were more challenging then.
Also this huge area had many different diverse peoples. Most of them resisted Roman rule, like the Gauls in France. After the Romans subdued them they usually had to maintain an army in these places to prevent rebellions. They had to defend this vast area. An example of that is the permanent garrison they had to keep at Hadrian's Wall between Britain and Scotland. They built a vast road system throughout their empire to maintain order. There must have been a great language problem as each of the subject people had their own language and culture. It's amazing that the Roman Empire lasted as long as it did.

Rome Hotelbye nowadays is certainly one of the most crucial tourist places of the planet, due to the incalculable immensity of its archaeological and art pieces, along with for the charm of its unique traditions, the sweetness of its beautiful opinions, and the majesty of its great parks. Among the points should see durante Rome is Campo de'Fiori. Campo de'Fiori is a rectangular square south of Piazza Navona applied as a market place through the day, and celebration key for college pupils and tourists at night. The title means “area of flowers” and was provided through the Middle Ages when the region was really a meadow. Still another place worth visit is The Roman Forum. Situated in the small valley between the Palatine and Capitoline Hills, The Roman Forum was for centuries the teeming center of old Rome and today is really a vast ruin of architectural fragments
