Without Beethoven, music would almost certainly have developed in a different way. He changed everything forever and provided the bridge between Classicism and Romanticism. The emotion and feeling in his music, plus his revolutionary approach to form and harmony, far surpassed any composer before him and I don't believe any composer after him could have been untouched by his infulence.

Brahms, for example, was almost obsessive about Beethoven and always considered himself in Beethoven's shadow. He was not alone in those feelings. I believe Beethoven 'kick-started' the Romantic era. It would have happened without him but it would have been quite different, for sure.
