What most people do not do when on the internet is to watch at the task bar at the bottom of the screen.

If you are on a web page and hover ( no clicking ) your mouse over a supposed link or picture is to watch the bottom of your screen, just about the task bar.

As in this page if you hove over the 'Search' button and watch the bottom of your screen you'll see '/search/search_result;_ylt' etc etc and the end is '_ylv=3'.

If you do that and you see something ending in .exe, .com, .bat you are going to activate something that can RUN on your computer. DO NOT DO it.

Some might end in .gif or .jpg or .bmp, these are picture files.

Be careful what you click on while on the internet. Make it a habit to check the url you are going to go to at the bottom of your screen, just above the task bar.

Be careful out there

Are you sure it was a virus? It is possible it was spyware. I do have 2 recommendations. First, you should install an antivirus program with a resident component on your computer. Most antivirus can perform a scan "on demand" and "on access." The "on access" portion scans files as they are being written on your computer. It provides real time protection. So, if a website should try to infect your computer with a virus, the antivirus program will detect it and stop it. There is no shortage of good free antivirus programs, such as: Antivir, Avast and AVG. All 3 are free for personal use and you can download them at www.filehippo.com

My second recommendation is to install Spyware Blaster or Spybot Search & Destroy. Both programs are free and can be downloaded at www.filehippo.com The makers of these 2 programs maintain a list of all known "malicious" websites. The programs block Internet Explorer from downloading websites which are contained on the list. The makers constantly updates any newly discovered malicious websites.

If the website has a virus your anti-virus software would notify it provided it has recognized it.

Mostly it's the Adult websites that have it, sometimes hackers attack a Genuine Decent website and put a virus into it.

I use McAfee's Site Advisor. I love it! It lights up green if it's a safe site, yellow to use caution, and if it lights up red, forget about it, i'm not going cause that's where most of the viruses are.

McAfee's Site Advisor can be of some help in determining if a site is safe. I use it on both my Firefox and IE browsers.
