Please, please don't take this the wrong way.
My gelding gets turned on when I hug him and pet him...is this because he's horny? Or just relaxed?
Please don't take this the wrong way, seriously people grow up.

Yes geldings can still get horny.

If a stud colt is cut late in life usually after a yr old they can retain some hormones in their body that causes studly behavior. Some can even tease mares (to tell if the mare is in season, get them ready for the stallion), some can even go as far as to mount mares, and do the full act of breeding. They just won't produce a baby cuz the organ that produces sperm has been removed.

Usually if a gelding drops during grooming or interaction from others it usually just means he has relaxed enough that things "fall out" so to say. If he is truly aroused he will be stiff and swinging not dangling and limp.

Having a horse that will drop when groomed comes in handy when its time for cleaning the sheath! You can also let him drop then spritz his member with some baby oil, helps break the smegma up. He will be clean as a whistle after a couple times.

Hope this helps.

Some geldings may occasionally act studdish, but I've not seen that in response to being hugged by a person. I assume you think your gelding is excited because he is dropped. The answer as to whether he is relaxed or horny is what he's doing with it. If he's at "half mast", then he's relaxed. If he's at "attention", then he is horny.

well, if you just mean that he "dropped" it could be because he was relaxed that you were there, i know many horses that are extreemly ansty untill their "moms" come and then alll is good and the relax and pee and drink and everything, or he could just be one of those geldings who "lets it all hang out" i've known a few of those ones too.

I don't see how, because they remove the organs that produces the horny hormones.
