Many teams consider their goaltenders to be one of their best players and best team leaders. How come no goalies ever wear the captain insignia? or am I wrong and several do in the NHL?

Yes, the goaltenders who have served as captain in the NHL are:

* John Ross Roach, Toronto St. Patricks, 1924-25.
* George Hainsworth, Montreal Canadiens, 1932-33.
* Charlie Gardiner, Chicago Black Hawks, 1933-34.
* Bill Durnan, Montreal Canadiens, 1947-48.

However, the rules since then have changed as this Wikipedia article describes:

"Goaltenders may not be designated as captains or alternate captains because of the logistical challenges of having the goaltender relay rules discussions between referees and coaches and then return to the crease. The last NHL goaltender who served as team captain prior to this rule coming into effect was Bill Durnan of the Montreal Canadiens in the 1947-1948 season."

Hope this helps! :)

Goalie3s are no longer eligible to be captains in the NHL. At one time (prior to 1949-50) many teams did have goalies as captains, one of the most notable being Bill Durnan of the Montreal Canadiens.
