if you went it up a chinese person & pointed out they were chinese, they might be offended? Me & my friend were talking about that the other day.
Another example.
-Looks at last name-Oh, you're Polish! (no offence taken)
-Looks at skin color-Oh, you're African American! (offence taken)
^(that being said nicely too.)
Idk, is just weird. My friend & I were talking about it the other day.

Well, in general, just pointing out something like that to a stranger is offensive because they don't know your intention. But any time you are talking about race, the whole nation gets into an uproar. If you say anything that refers to race (rude or not rude, even well-intended) you automatically are labeled a racist. Not that you are, just our country has now gone crazy. Instead of dealing with issues, we stand around pointing fingers and refusing to take care of issues that need to be addressed rather than handle the issues. Sad state of affairs.

I don't understand the big deal and what's with the "african" american? When your family has been here for a 100 years or so there no african left.

well its like this...ur stating the obvious....its not like I would get offended b/c u said Oh you're black...but I would think it was a dumb comment b/c its obvious that I am black...lol. I think you're just making it out to be something that its really not.

it depends on each individuals upbringing....I'm white, but my last name is spanish and associated with hispanics, but I don't take offense to someone pointing it out...in what you've described, though, most black people seem to take offense because of rampant discrimination based on skin color, the best advice is to not point out charcteristics of people if you wish to avoid offending them

I think it depends on the person not an entire race. People are people so it's not fair to generalize.
