Ancestry.com has an extensive CW database but you have to subscribe to get copies of the the actual records. Knowing your ancestors home county or town helps. Also try rootsweb.com and usgenweb.com(every state and their counties are listed ) The counties listed often have CW rosters in here database or list like men the served from that county. You may have to search some of this manually. Most CW regiments where raised locally. In a typical company may have 5 or 10 men one county and 5 or 10 from a neighboring county. Also look soldiers with the same family surnames many cousins, brothers and extended family served together. There are a lot of CW regimental rosters on the web both north and south. Also, the fraternal organization like the "Sons of Confederate Veterans(www.scv.org) or Sons of Union Veterans(www.suvcw.org) may be of help.

Try this: http://www.civilwar.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm. It's an effort by the National Park Service to make Civil War soldier data online. If you're not sure of the name or unit but know where he lived, you may be able to find a state website that identifies the units that came from that county.

Look it up on the records, if they were in a higher position you could probably find them, but people usually didn't keep records back then. Try looking up some organizations who specialize in this. Good luck!

If for some reason you cannot do your family tree...... you can always tune in to them, if you have something personal of theirs.
