9 negative times a negative equals a positive.

When you raise a number to a positive number power, such as two, your answer will ALWAYS be positive. When you raise a number to an odd number power, like 3, the answer will be the same sign as the original number. For example, -3 x -3. This equals +9 because when you multiply a negative number with a negative number, your result is positive. If you had -3 x -3 x -3 , your answer would be -27. This is because a negative times a postive (which is a negative times a negative, making three negatives) will always be negative.

Why? It's just one of those math rules.

It's 9.

A negative times a negative is a positive.

-4 to the second power is 16, for example.

it actually depends... if it is -(3) to the second power, that would be a negative because you only square what is on the inside of parenthesis and the negative gets tacked on after the other math has been done. if it is (-3) to the second power, it would be 9 because for some crazy reason a negative times a negative creates a positive... I never did care for those crazy and abstract math concepts
