You can do it but why would you? The older they are the more likely they are to fail, they cost very little and its easier and cheaper to replace them while the tire is already off than it is to do it later when they do fail.

False economy of the dangerous kind. A tire shop should supply a new basic valve automatically, or charge you no more than a buck or so. If getting the Dill or Schrader valves, those nice chrome stem ones, it will be a little more, obviously. But an old valve has just as many miles on as the old tire, just as much exposure to heat, cold, beating sunshine, dirt, and everything else. Notice when they remove them, they just hook on, pull, and voila, the old valve stems just snap? That is how much safety factor there is left in an old valve stem.

Depends, old rubber valve stems NO. The new steel ones the have the tire pressure monitor built into them, Yes it is ok. They have seal kits for the latter.

The ones with the tire pressure monitor in them cost 35 bucks and up...Apiece

Depends on the age and the style of the valve. In honesty though, go ahead and pay the tiny bit extra for the new valvestems, its better in the long run for you.

Why would you risk a $100 tire to save $1.50 on a new valve?

why? They are about a buck apiece. Change them now so you won't be jacking up the car on the side of the road somewhere.
