How important is it to have a breast pump? I will be at home with my baby every day. Will I need one if I will be around my child 24-7? It's my first...obviously. Also, how much should I spend on one if I need one?

I am also a stay at home mom, iam home all the time, or my baby is with me when iam away. I was given a breast pump by the hospital- I can count on my hand the number of times I have had cause to use it. All of them were for convenience, not necessity.

I honestly dont think you NEED one. Although its great to have one for those few times that you want to go out alone before baby can eat solids or sleep through your absence.

I don't think u necessarily NEED one, but I certainly used mine even after I quit work. There will be time you will want to pump such as going out with your spouse!! (or girl friends!!) and you'll want to pump ahead of time and leave the milk with the sitter. What if u want a few drinks one night? You can pump and dump the milk and not worry about it being in the breast milk (I dont recommend this til after bfing is established well tho!)

Obviously you wont use it as much as a working mom so I wouldnt necessarily waste big bucks on the high end model. One of the smaller models like Avent may do you. Medela is expensive but works great. Also some hospitals give them to you, and if u qualify for programs like WIC, you may be allowed to borrow one from them for a time.

There will come a time u wotn be with the baby 24/7 and if u plan to nurse for the recommended time (1-2 years) then you will probably want at least a hand pump!

Congrats and enjoy!

I would say no if you are a stay at home mom- for the most part. You won't really know for sure until you have the baby. I was planning on keeping my baby with me all the time, but then I still ended up needing a pump. You can always rent one if you have to...a good one is a pretty big investment. ($200-$300). It's nice to have one handy- in the event you would like to go somewhere without baby like the grocery store- for dad to feed the baby, or convenient if you go to church or something and the baby goes in the nursery. I needed one in the early days because I lost a lot of blood and my baby had jaundice- was extremely sleepy...so my milk didn't come in very quickly- plus we weren't yet nursing successfully when we left the hospital, but I still wanted my baby to have my breastmilk. That's an extreme situation though, and I had no way of anticipating that it would happen like that. Hopefully you won't have to deal with anything of that nature. We got one as a belated gift and now I'm really glad we have it. It comes in handy.

I bought a perfectly good $50 one. I think it was the Evenflow brand. I am a stay at home mom too. I'll be honest I don't use it very often. I don't leave my baby very much. But it is good to know that I can leave if I want to. It is also great to be able to pump some and store some up incase I have to leave for an emergency or something and can't take her with me and wont be back in time for feedings. So I guess it is really good to have one even if you plan to be with her all the time. Also they suggest that at some point you start giving her bottles more often so that other people can feed them too and its the step before the cup.

Well, I too am a stay at home mom, and I rented a dual pump. It came in handy a night, when I needed my rest, so my husband could feed him. I also got mastitis twice in two weeks, so my son had a hard time wanting to breast feed. I also had a c-sec and hurt a lot. Pumping every once in a while and letting someone else enjoy time with my son was worth getting to rest and lay down for a few minutes. I would recommend getting a small one, or renting one to see if you like it. You don't have to pump, it just might come in handy. You never know

Congratz on the babe!!! I am a SAHM and love every minute I get with my babies!! I solely breastfed my first and never bought a pump. I wish I had, because everyone can connect with baby this way, and she still gets breast milk. With my second who is six days old, I have already pumped twice! Daddy has given her a bottle and so has her Nana! As far as what to pay, it will depend on what quality, style (motorized or manual), lone or dual. I registered for one that was right at 100 and my husband's co-workers all pitched in and bought it for us. I love having a pump and think you probably would, too. The only caution I have is: remember to relax while you are pumping!!! I have talked to some Moms who couldn't relax enough to get more than 2 ounces expressed at a time. Keep baby near while pumping or keep a picture with you. You can try reading a favorite book while pumping, too. Good luck on baby!!!!

I don't think you "need" one, but it's nice to have.. I am also a stay at home mom, I bought a Avent hand pump and I have used it... but not very often.. You will probably find it convenient if you need to go out and someone has to feed the baby.. I also had mastitis a few times and it was nice to have my own pump here to help me get through it..
I'd say get one, because you never know.. but it probably won't be something you need for the first two months.
I am attaching a link to the pump set I have.. It is not terribly expensive, it works for what I need, and it has got me through to breastfed babies.
Congrats!

I wouldn't bother if you're going to be a SAHM. Even if you need one, you can get an Avent from Target, etc... in one quick trip.

I have a perfectly good Isis pumpm that i used for about 2 weeks, while doing some work at night. Kind of a waste, as my son wouldn't touch a bottle;-)

No you dont need one. I never needed one because I was with my babies 24/7. As they get older and can go without for longer periods its easy to go out and be back in time for the next feeding. AS long as your not expecting to paint the town red, and just want a quick break for lunch or a movie or a quick shopping trip.
So I never had any problems. Plus I never went out that much maybe once or twice to a movie after they were 6 months old.

I did try using a pump but was never succesfull at it. And I didnt see the point anyway. If my baby wasnt welcome somewhere then neither was I, simple.
