When formatting the hard drive in xp, i am only prompted for ntfs. How does this effect installing a mac os later on?

If you're planning on reformatting the drive before you install Mac OS, then there's no issue. Just use the Mac's Disk Utility program and reformat it as Mac OS (Journaled).

There's no way to install OSX on a hard drive formatted on a PC. You could format it on the Mac and then use Bootcamp to put a FAT32 partition on it that both Windows and OSX can see, but the actually OSX would still have to be on the OSX partition.
