Our congressman and women have become very adept of saying, "I'm the good guy in a sea of bad politicians. It's not my fault." Also, each congressman panders to their constituency with pork barrel projects. They can go to their districts and say, "See what I did for you? Without me, you would have never gotten that rain forest in the middle of Iowa." We keep electing the same bribe accepting (I mean campaign contribution accepting) knuckleheads and we wonder why we are where we are.

Congress as a whole has relatively low approval ratings. That includes members of both parties. The individual members of Congress have much higher approval ratings among the constituents in their own districts.

The aproval rating is national, the election local (typically in a gerrymandered district).
It's long been the case that Americans like thier own representatives, but dispise Congress, as a whole.

The wisdom of so many that come before us speaks to why these things happen. Also our population is blinded by the smoke and mirrors and proaganda. We are bombed with mind altering waves from the TV, radio, and cd's to make us accept what is happening. To convince us that we can't do anything to change it.
The government has had a program running since the kids protested Vietnam to keep us from ever having the money to do that again. Every year some new tax eats away at our striving to get ahead. Now we work so much to earn so little we have no time to call the Flim Flam Men in our government to accountablity!
"When ancient opinions and rules of life are taken away, the loss cannot possibly be estimated. From that moment we have no compass to govern us, nor can we know distinctly to what port to steer."
Edmund Burke
A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.
Sir Winston Churchill 1874-1965
"When men yield up the privilege of thinking, the last shadow of liberty quits the horizon"
Thomas Paine
The government consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office.
Henry Louis Mencken (1880- 1956)
“History records that the money changers have used every form of abuse, intrigue, deceit, and violent means possible to maintain their control over governments by controlling the money and its issuance.”
James Madison
“The brave man inattentive to his duty, is worth little more to his country than the coward who deserts her in the hour of danger.”
Andrew Jackson
Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.
George Orwell
Democracy is a form of government that substitutes election by the incompetent many for appointment by the corrupt few.
George Bernard Shaw
"If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you and may posterity forget that ye were once our countrymen."
Samuel Adams
If we continue to ask for truth, then refuse to listen.
Mankind will forever, be doomed to destruction.

Members of Congress are elected by their constituents within the state they represent. They take very good care of their constituents but often are seen in a negative light on a national level and at that point are led by the party to a large extent.

because people ALWAYS blame the other states Senators and Representatives not their own. Look at pork- People scream when another state gets millions "This pork is outrageous" and get mad at their Congressional delegation when they dont bring home money. People are blinded by stupidity I think. There are over 600 million people in this country (some die and others born every minute) and I dont believe that we cant find 435 new people to go to Washington

Those in Congress are elected by their constituents so as long as your constituents are happy with you, you will get re-elected. I call this the good representative/bad Congress idea. Our representative is good but everyone else in Congress is bad.

As Tip O'Neill once said, "All politics is local". What we see as a boondoggle (ie. Alaska's "bridge to nowhere), is regarded in a candidate's home district as evidence of a Congressman's ability to get the job done.

Advantages of incumbancy, and
while you may disdain Congress as a whole, you probably like your local representative just fine, if you even know who that is.
