WWI was called the"WAR TO END ALL WARS" during. And dubbed WWI during WWII. WWII was WWII from the entry of the US into the conflict!

During and after WWI, it was called 'The Great War' since it was the first war ever to involve so many countries. Once WWII came around, WWI was renamed and WWII was called that even during the war.
