I have a Maytag Ice20 refrigerator and it has the freezer on the bottom. The refrigerator box has french doors, which is very convenient. And, the freezer box slides out to open. This is very convenient, because things that go into the freezer are sometimes big (like a turkey) and slippery. So, it's easier to raise and lower things from the top than from a high point in the front (like an upper freezer box).
I don't like side-to-side refrigerator/freezers. The freezer is always too narrow for a lot of things.

I prefer the freezer on the top because I feel it gives me more room. I work twelve hour days and I'm in graduate school so I'm very busy during the week which means I don't have time to cook. So I do all my cooking on the weekends and freeze it to eat throughout the week, so I need a lot of freezer room. Also I live alone so I freeze the loaves of bread so that I can eat it all without it molding.

Bottom. Use the refrigerator section much more, and having it on top is more convienent. Plus you bang your head less! Don't like side by side, the freezer is too narrow, and it makes the box too deep also.

I have always liked the freezer on top. Since cold falls, it helps keep the fridge cool. When it is on bottom, it has to work harder to cool the upper fridge.
It saves energy to have the freezer on top!

Freezer at the bottom (upside-down fridge).
- the fridge is used more often, so no bending.
- we have a fridge that also dispenses water so this has to be at chest level.
