For a class A CDL you have to pass 3 written test, 1st is the CDL test, 2ed is the combination test (for a tractor trailer rig not just a straight truck) and 3rd pass the air brake test. Once you get that then your issued a permit to drive with someone who has a CDL. After you pass a pre-trip inspection/road test You will get a CDL. Endorsements for the CDL (no road test needed for any of the endorsements except the passenger, all you have to do is pass the written test which cost less then $20 each) are Tanker (test is a joke) Doubles and triples (test is a joke) Passenger (for a bus, I dont have that endorsement) and Hazardous cargo (test is a real mother plus you have to go to a state office, not just your local DMV and pay almost $100 to have your fingerprints scanned and sent to the FBI for a background check, then pay the $20 for the test once your background check comes back)
Hope this helps

You must have an air brake endorsement which is not really an endorsement as much as it is a restriction. If you fail the air brake section of the test, your license is restricted to mechanical brakes only and I have not seen a class A vehicle with mechanical brakes in 40-50 years. Endorsements are not necessary if you are hauling nonhazardous, solid products, check with your local DMV for details.

You only have to get the endorsements that you want/need. If you are going to haul tankers, then you need the tanker endorsement and probably the hazmat one too. I have always been told that you are better off to get all the endorsements so that you are able to haul anything. Many drivers are dropping hazmat since it is so expensive and the questions are really hard. I still have mine, but will probably drop it next renewal.
