Hang up on them unless they are at the door then I just ignore their knocking.

Call: If I do happen to answer, I just tell them I'm not interested. If they're rude (which has happened), I hang up.

Door to door: I tell them I'm visiting relatives who aren't home. :-) They can't sell stuff to someone who doesn't live there.

well I don't get too many anymore, I put my number on the do not call list, but I used to give the phone to my kids (4 and 5) and let them talk to them...they always asked" where's your mommy", and the girls would say, "right here laughing"

When they start to talk I say, "Thank you" and hang up. Much better than cussing them out...

tell them i am on every single do not call list in the known universe, then ask for their name and the name of their company so i can report them. in this state, it is a $25,000 fine for EACH call to someone on the list. they hang up really quickly.

Well, one time as I remember: they called my house and so I said," How did you get this unlisted number?"
The gentleman, in a chipper bubbly voice said," I personally specially selected it." I then abruptly spoke back by saying these words," Well that's just great; NOW SPECIALLY JUST LOSE IT!!!"
Without time to get another word out of his mouth I hung up my phone on him. ;-)

I hang up on telemarketers. I have a "No Solicitors" sign on my door.

They don't DARE come to my door! I've got 'Beware of Dog' signs everywhere...and I don't own a dog.

On the phone, I try to sell them a Kirby vacuum (which I don't sell, but my married daughter and her husband do).
