Giving a verizon pre pay phone as a gift, on average how much does it cost a month?

I know it costs 99 cents a day and 10 cents a minute, but does that all come off of the refill cards? I mean for instance, you buy a 30 dollar card, will you have any minutes or will it only pay for your service for a month?
