Enki, you often pose polarities. This question seems a polarity on the surface, but the truth is that freedom does bring safety...freedom from judgment, attachment, anger, pain & suffering, etc., bringing one to a pure state of non-suffering, a state of complete freedom from the petty worldly attachments that enslave humans and trap them in the world of duality. To be above the melee of constantly changing states and conditions that the ego-mind inflicts bestows a safe-keeping and well-being, for one has recognized the impermanency of these states and has stepped out of the fray to the freedom and safety of non-attachment. In today's Society, I would be very cautious on whom you trust,I always thought that if you Lived in America we were Land of the free, you could be safer living here then, anywhere else,in the World. Now I do not know if you could trust your next door neighbor, as the way things are going look at the Violence that is going on, not only in our Country, but all over the World. So,I would say that we might be safe to some extent, and free, if we obey the Law and be a good American Citizen. I would not want to Live anywhere else in the World than The United States of America. If someone does not agree than they can Move away from Here.

In the society, to be safe and to be free are two opposites. Safety means agree with majority for protection, while freedom means not agree and no protection, even more.. with threat from majority in some cases.
For an independent living being, to be free is a form of safety /distance from bounds (to the society and its rules). But from the viewpoint of a member of society, to be safe is a kind of freedom from threats.
So the answer is: yes, it is possible to be safe & free at the same time. Just two different point of views, for different peoples' preferences to live as a member of society or as a freeman.

Eddy

As long as a person is stuck to the level of perception through the restricted sensory levels,
Safety and Freedom are opposites.
Safety is only through some sort of restriction, and restriction has never been freedom in a true sense !
When this perception 'happens' to deepen beyond sensory levels, the ultimate freedom makes 'safely' quite redundant! (this concept is not quite easily acceptable, so it might seem inappropriate to add in this answer, but 'withholding' it might probably delay a potential person, so it is mentioned with this 'disclaimer' ! Curiously enough, it is this 'sense' of seeking a security, safety, that stems from fear, the fear stems from expectations, and all this puts up a big impregnable 'virtual' fortress around the 'freedom' !)

Yes it is. Here I am in a cold climate sitting in a warm room with no fear of going hungry or cold. I have a place to sleep tonight and the police are still going to be patrolling the streets against thugs, thieves and murderers.
I can come and go as I please any hour of the day, I can leave the city for another city and find the same state of security. Safe and free.
I am free to worship, to work, to move, to vote, to refuse voting, to complain, to protest, to admire, to admonish. And do it all safely.

The old freedom or security gambit eh? I would have said no a few months ago but I have experienced a new faith that I never had before and it is this faith that tells me I am safe and free from worry not by anything I have to depend on from this wicked world but from divine grace alone.

"With God all things are possible"
Freedom is defined as :
Freedom is narrowly defined by Classic Liberals and Neoliberals as the ability to act without restraint from the government, or more broadly defined as the ability to have access to particular resources from the government without constraint by Social Liberals and most variants of Socialism. Defined thusly, 'freedom' is a broad notion, not necessarily covering the same field as 'free will'.
The protection of interpersonal freedom can be the object of a social and political investigation, while the metaphysical foundation of inner freedom is a philosophical and psychological question. Both forms of freedom come together in each individual as the internal and external values mesh together in a dynamic compromise and power struggle; the society fighting for power in defining the values of individuals and the individual fighting for societal acceptance and respect in establishing one's own values in it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_%28philosophy%29
Freedom is a Philosophical Concept.
What is Safety?
Safety is the state of being "safe" (from French sauf), the condition of being protected against physical, social, spiritual, financial, political, emotional, occupational, psychological, educational or other types or consequences of failure, damage, error, accidents, harm or any other event which could be considered non-desirable. This can take the form of being protected from the event or from exposure to something that causes health or economical losses. It can include protection of people or of possessions.
There also are two slightly different meanings of safety, for example, home safety may indicate a building's ability to protect against external harm events (like weather, home invasion, etc), and the second that its internal installations (like appliances, stairs, etc) are safe (not dangerous or harmful) for its habitants.
Safety can be limited in relation to some guarantee or a standard of insurance to the quality and unharmful function of an object or organization. It is used in order to ensure that the object or organization will do only what it is meant to do.
It's important to realize that safety is relative. Eliminating all risk, if even possible, would be extremely difficult and very expensive. A safe situation is one where risks of injury or property damage are low and manageable.

How can one be free and safe at the same time? How can one accomplish this and remain sane? The answer to this lies within the barriers of humanity, personality, will power, lifestyles, and the society which one lives in.
To answer your questions I will give you examples of people who suddenly became both free and safe -- the holocaust survivors, children in orphanges, prisoners from vietnam or other war zone areas, etc.
As an individual feeling of freedom and safety, sometimes that is dependent on people becoming better to others.

We do have to use our God given intelligence. We just can't do and dam thing we please and think we will be free from any kind of reaction or danger. If you hug a tiger or kiss a poisonous snake then you will most likely be in danger unless you are some expert animal tamer. If you run out in front of a car thinking I am free from danger then this is foolishness. Freedom means understanding the laws of nature and Gods will and acting accordingly. Thanks.

To be safe is to be free from danger, whatever form it takes. So, no. The human body is fragile. Death can happen at any time.
